Jane F. Shearer Memorial Scholarship Fund
Blessed. We were blessed to call Jane Shearer our friend and colleague. Taken from us too soon, Jane was an ardent supporter of the mission of the Foundation and served Suffolk County Community College with a big, bright spirit that reflected generosity, warmth and love for those around her. We celebrate her life and convey our deepest sympathies to her family, including her husband, Doug, and son, Bryce. A scholarship has been established in Jane’s name.

THE JANE F. SHEARER SCHOOL OF NURSING

We are thankful for the warm memories we have of Jane and are delighted to share exciting news with you. Your generous contribution to the Jane F. Shearer Memorial Scholarship Fund made a very big difference in the lives of some of the most promising nursing students in Suffolk County!
Thank you for helping us keep Jane’s passion for higher education and the students at SUNY Suffolk County Community College burning bright.
Since October 2019, eight nursing students have received a scholarship from Jane’s fund and have been named Shearer Scholars. Your support helped these nursing students get started in their career, complete their licensing exam, or advance their education. With continuing donations to Jane’s scholarship fund, this year we increased the amount of each annual award by 50%!
Jane’s interest in the nursing program began when she observed health care professionals at work. She appreciated and respected the care she and her parents received at home, in hospitals and by the Certified Nursing Assistants at her mom’s memory community. Jane always reciprocated with a big smile, encouraging words, and usually something sweet-to-eat.
Our family, the Suffolk Community College Foundation and our college community is grateful and overwhelmed by the financial contributions received from Jane’s friends, colleagues, alumni and even students. The generosity of Jane’s donors has endowed her scholarship to forever benefit the College’s nursing students.
Throughout Jane’s 30-year career at Suffolk County Community College, she was a champion for a vibrant campus environment. Jane was Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and President of the Guild of Administrative Officers when her career tragically ended from cancer in 2019. We are humbled and overjoyed to share that Jane’s life and legacy will be forever recognized through the Jane F. Shearer School of Nursing at Suffolk Community College. Jane’s memory will now play an even more prominent role in training generations of qualified and skilled nurses.
Jane’s focus on nursing students has guided our direction and we are committed to expanding her vision. Increasing healthcare services for an aging population is driving the need for highly skilled, trained and educated nurses. Growing contributions to Jane’s scholarship fund will provide additional resources for students and programs at the Jane F. Shearer School of Nursing.
Please take a moment right now to consider another gift to this amazing and transformative scholarship fund and thank you for keeping Jane’s unbridled energy alive!
A new gift to the scholarship fund will be used creatively to expand access to the Jane F. Shearer School of Nursing, especially for promising students in need of financial support to follow their dreams of success through a caring career in nursing and healthcare. Thanks again!
Gratefully yours,
Doug and Bryce Shearer

Dear Friend of Jane Shearer,
We hope this note finds you well during this historic time.
May is Jane’s birthday month. Yes, that is right. Jane with her beautiful hair, youthful smile and contagious energy would have been 64 years young.
We are very fortunate to have known Jane’s professionalism, caring ways, and considerate personality. In reflecting over the Coronavirus impact on the life of Suffolk County Community College and its students, we can only speculate that it would have had a profound effect on her.
As you can imagine, social distancing would be difficult for Jane to embrace. Because she was such a people person, she would have found the 6-foot exclusion zone, with no hugs from her, to be problematic.
Most importantly, Jane was a visionary. As you know, our society’s focus over the last few months has been on first line workers including nurses. Jane always appreciated the vital role that nurses perform. That is why her memorial scholarship concentrates on nursing students.
Jane can see today, more than ever, we need a greater number of students in the nursing profession. Her wish was to assist talented and deserving students meet their goal of completing the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Certificate Program. Jane was so proud the Suffolk County Community College nursing program excels in this endeavor.
What better way to celebrate Jane’s birthday, and the need for the nurses she visualized, than by contributing to the Jane F. Shearer Memorial Scholarship.
