About The Bobby Hommel Memorial Hardship Fund

·       Established by Ms. Shannon O’Neill, Director of Veterans Affairs, Suffolk County Community College, to recognize and honor the late Robert Lloyd “Bobby” Hommel, an army sniper who served in the 101st Airborne Division of the U. S. Army.  He served three tours in Iraq having earned the Army Commendation Medal with Valor.  Although his time on the battlefield ended, his battles with the stress of the things he saw and had to endure continued since his return home.  The burdens of his heroism as well as the loss of so many of his comrades always weighed heavily on him.  Despite his suffering he was a joy to be around and continued to work hard to pursue his degree.    Bobby was killed in a car accident on October 6th 2015.
