Kevin Foley

Unlike student-athletes, who seem to sprout annually and effortlessly from the scholastic soil, scholar-athletes are a somewhat rarer hybrid. They are relatively scarce because the resources needed to succeed in one endeavor are demanded by the other as well. There is no better example of this than Kevin Foley, Professor of Health and Human Services, Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director of Suffolk County Community College, New York’s largest and most comprehensive two year institution of higher learning. In fact, he is one of the “winningest” coaches in U.S. collegiate athletics leading his teams to an overall record of 424 – 139. His teams have made the playoffs 22 straight years, playing in 12 semi-finals, winning 6 regional championships and I incredible national title. Dozens of former players have gone on to continue their playing careers at some of the nation’s most elite four-year institutions.

In addition to 24 years of coaching women’s basketball at Suffolk County Community College, Professor Foley is a master teacher having received the New York State Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Distinguished Faculty award, Outstanding Community College Teacher and the Teacher Who Made A Difference Award from his students and colleagues. Foley’s 41 year teaching career followed his own athletic achievements. Averaging 30 points per game as a senior at Seton Hall High School, Foley went on to break high school career scoring records, ultimately earning a basketball scholarship to Seton Hall University where he served as Captain of the team averaging 14 points per game. A 1994 inductee to the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame honoring his outstanding basketball career, Professor Foley mentors students on their pathways to success. A scholar-athlete through and through, Foley has inspired generations of athletes
