Schuyler Bailar – Monday, April 1, 2019
In alignment with our institutional goal of diversity, the College’s LGBTQ+ Task Force, along with the Center for Social Justice and Human Understanding, are hosting Mr. Schuyler Bailar, the first transgender athlete to compete as a member of any NCAA Division I men’s team. The program is sponsored by grant funding secured through the Explorations in Diversity and Academic Excellence award distributed by the State University of New York. Presentations by Mr. Bailar will take place on Monday, April 1, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. in the Shea Theatre located inside the Islip Arts Building on the Ammerman Campus in Selden, and at 12:30 p.m. in the Montaukett Learning Center, Room 107/108, on the Eastern Campus.
Mr. Bailar is a student athlete at Harvard University and is the first openly transgender NCAA Division I swimmer. He is an advocate for LGBTQ rights serving on the NCAA Common Ground initiative and supporting the USA Swimming cultural inclusion guide. Mr. Bailar was awarded the Community Advocate Award from the Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League, and his 60 Minutes profile “Switching Teams” was nominated for the 28th Annual GLAAD Media awards. Mr. Bailar was also featured in the series IDENTIFY by the International Olympic Committee for his efforts in promoting gender inclusion in sports. An eloquent and engaging speaker, Mr. Bailar has appeared on various talk shows, such as NPR’s Dianne Rhem Show, 60 Minutes and The Ellen Show, and has been interviewed by respected publications such as The Economist, The Boston Globe, Swimmer’s World, and The Washington Post.
