Charting the Course: Where Technology & Government Meet to Create Opportunity
Hosted by Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory,

Tuesday, August 8, 2017 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Civic Tech at SCCC
Hauppauge, NY - July 19, 2017 - For the first time in the Long Island region, a conference next month will be dedicated exclusively to the emerging industry of civic tech.

Hosted by Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, the “Civic Tech Suffolk” conference will explore how government can use technology to solve municipal and social challenges. The event is part of the Presiding Officer’s “Charting the Course” series on how government and business can develop stronger partnerships.

“The civic tech industry could have the answers to so many challenges we face here in Suffolk, from government efficiency to social issues like homelessness and drug abuse,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Bringing together under one roof leaders in government and business – this time the tech sector in particular – is how we start the conversation about resolving these challenges together.”

Civic Tech Suffolk will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Babylon Student Center at Suffolk County Community College in Selden. Registration, breakfast and networking begin at 8 a.m. The event is free.

The day will begin with a keynote address from government technology industry expert Sid Burgess, who is a senior solutions consultant at Granicus, a national leader in digital civic tech. Then, a panel of experts from the technology, government and business fields will discuss how marrying government with technology can result in greater efficiency among municipal departments and better access to constituent services for residents. Conference attendees can then attend breakout sessions on hot topics like cybersecurity, predictive analytics, business development and procurement, apps and gadgets, hardware and software, and using tech for smart growth and to connect with Next Generation residents.

Guests will also be able to tour an “Apps & Gadgets Café” with various county departments and app developers showcasing their technological accomplishments. Additionally, “A Taste of Suffolk” will feature samplings of culinary delights from local restaurants.
