Annual Giving Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why does the Suffolk Community College Foundation solicit money every year?
Private support contributes to making Suffolk County Community College the largest and most comprehensive two-year institution of higher learning in New York State. Annual gifts to the College, made through the Suffolk Community College Foundation, strengthen academic programs, support new research, and enrich the educational experience for our students.

Suffolk County Community College is a publicly funded institution. Why does it need private support?
Basic operations at Suffolk County Community College are supported by tuition revenue, Suffolk County and New York State. Recent state and county appropriations have provided less than 50% of the College's overall budget. These resources alone are inadequate to provide a transformative education that leads student to intellectual and economic empowerment. Your gift matters and has an immediate impact on our students by providing for programs, research, scholarships and college-wide initiatives that enhance student opportunities.

Is my gift tax-deductible?
Yes. In most cases, the full value of your gift is tax-deductible. If you receive a tangible benefit in return (like a ticket to an event or some other item of value), only a portion of your gift will be deductible. The Suffolk Community College Foundation will provide you with a tax receipt to confirm your gift and any specific designation.

What are matching gifts?
Many employers match charitable gifts made by employees and their spouses - especially gifts to support higher education. You may be able to double (or even triple!) the value of your gift to Suffolk County Community College!
